After he experienced a recurrence of cancer near his brain, the radiation used to treat the cancer caused him to become totally blind in 1996. Assisted by his wife, Dr. Pickering continued to preach without notes until the progress of the disease made continuation of his ministry impossible. Dr. Arnold pastored churches in Canada and Virginia for 44 years, including Denbigh Baptist Church in Newport News, Virginia and Temple Baptist Church in Fredericksburg, Virginia. It was composed in the incredibly short span of 24 days in 1741. Handel used as his text certain passages selected from the King James Bible by Charles Jennens. Incidentally, the correct title of the oratorio is simply "Messiah". BBN will feature Part 1 of the Messiah, which contains the prophecy and narrative of the Nativity. Russell Kelfer produced a wealth of helpful materials for spiritual growth as well as practical application Bible studies on living the Christian life.
